Empowerment is the key to any success right ?
I support parents daily, many feel that they have lost there voice, or don't feel they can speak their mind. I'm here to tell you to speak your truth, let's put it another way how many people have complained about a meal in a restaurant? How many of you have asked for a refund if something is damaged ? So why not complain or ask for something to be changed, updated or amended or a professional isnt sbeing supportive or helpful that somebody can be replaced that isn't doing there job correctly?
Right, you may have experienced a professional working with your child in a school as an example a teacher, SENCo or a headteacher. I want you to know that it is absolutely fine to express your concerns to that professional. That professional may be someone who works in the LA like a SEND case worker or manager. If your unsure how to tackle the problems your faced with, step outside your head, breathe, sit with it for a a few hours or a day and then write down a list of the problems and how you would like them to be resolved and in a timely manner. Then in writing via email (paper trial) send a really nice email raising the problems and asking them to be looked at and would like a resolution so we can move forward in supporting your child or young person. Now, once you're ready to send remember to ask for a response within 5 working days.
By writing a email you are protecting your energy, it can be exhausting repeating yourself. Often having a conversation surrounding your child or young persons diffculites can leave you feeling overwhelmed and often get triggered. Having to navigate getting support, appoinments, and life in general can often mean we as parents and carers are on the back burner. To ensure we look after our own mental health its important you check in with yourself daily. This can be by sitting down alone to have a warm drink, something to read, listen to some music,or going for a walk
. Everyone is completly different in there approach to looking after their own mental health. I do sadly hear walkto often that parents get lost in the navigation of SEND and loss themsleves in the process.
Then you wait, normally most people respond acknowledging the email and then come back to you. I hope this simple but effective way of handling a problem helps.....
If it doesn't, we'll that's when booking a free consultation with me could help empower you to be supported on a 1-1 basis. Whatever happens stay positive, your not alone and finally GOODLUCK!
