Annual Reviews for EHCPs
An Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is a document that outlines the educational, health, and social care needs of a child or young person with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Annual reviews are a crucial part of the EHCP process, ensuring that the plan remains relevant and effective.
Purpose of Annual Reviews
To assess the progress of the child or young person against the outcomes set in the EHCP.
To determine whether the current provision is meeting the needs of the child or young person.
To identify any changes that may need to be made to the EHCP, including updates to the goals or support required.
To involve parents, the child or young person, and relevant professionals in the review process.
Process of Annual Reviews
Notification: The local authority? school SENCO must notify the parents and relevant professionals about the review meeting 2 weeks in advance so the parents have time to review before meeting.
Preparation: Gather all necessary documentation, including reports from teachers, therapists, and other professionals.
Review Meeting: Conduct the meeting with parent, SENCO and the LA case worker to discuss progress, challenges, and future needs.
Report Writing: Document the outcomes of the meeting, including any changes to the EHCP.
Finalizing Changes: The local authority will finalize the updated EHCP and share it with the relevant parties within 4 weeks
Key Considerations
Ensure that the views of the child or young person are taken into account during the review.
Involve all relevant professionals to provide a comprehensive overview of the child's needs.
Monitor the effectiveness of the current provisions and support systems.
Be proactive in addressing any emerging needs or changes in circumstances.
Conclusion
Annual reviews are an essential part of maintaining an effective EHCP. They provide an opportunity to reflect on progress, make necessary adjustments, and ensure that the educational, health, and social care needs of the child or young person are being met.
